Marriage & car insurance FAQ

Updated April 10, 2026 . AmFam Team

Getting married is an exciting time — it can also mean managing a lot of changes at once. From merging your finances to moving in together, there’s a lot to think about. But here’s something you might not have considered: marriage can also impact your car insurance, often in a positive way.

Why does marriage matter for car insurance?

When you tie the knot, you not only combine households — you combine driving histories, too. Insurance companies, including American Family Insurance, often see married couples as lower-risk drivers. So, you could see your car insurance premiums go down after you say, “I do.”

What documents do you need to buy a new car?

We've put together a list of all the files you'll need to bring with when buying a car at the dealership.

Should you combine your car insurance after marriage?

In most cases, combining your car insurance policies after marriage could help you save money. Reach out to your agent once you’ve sealed the deal to update your marital status and add your spouse to your policy.

With American Family, not only could married couples who join policies be eligible for savings, but they’ll also enjoy the convenience of managing their cars under one My Account login. Prefer to access your insurance information on the go? Simply download the MyAmFam app to add or remove policyholders, view your coverage, and manage your policies anytime, anywhere.

Keep in mind, though, that every situation is unique. If you or your spouse has a driving record with accidents or violations, it may make sense to keep your policies separate. Your agent can help you decide what’s best for your family.

Another way to save is to bundle your insurance. By combining multiple cars or different types of coverage — like bundling homeowners insurance with your auto coverage — you can unlock even deeper savings and make managing your insurance simpler.

Car insurance and domestic partnerships

Here’s more good news: If you’re living in a state that recognizes domestic partnerships, you and your significant other may qualify for a rate reduction. At American Family, we offer domestic partners the same car insurance discounts as married couples. To get started, you’ll need to:

  • Transfer ownership of your vehicle so both of you are listed as owners.
  • Be sure your car title shows the same primary residence for both of you.
  • Ask your agent to list one of you as the primary named insured and the other as secondary.

How to add your spouse to your car insurance policy

After you’re married or officially recognized as domestic partners, get in touch with your American Family Insurance agent to adjust your policy. They will walk you through the process and let you know if you qualify for a rate reduction.

Keep in mind that some states don’t allow discounts based on marital status.
